I think the hardest thing for me is that I tend to only want to write when I’m experiencing a burst of creativity, and those bursts don’t always come at the most opportune of times. What did you find most difficult about the writing process? The real kids I worked with will always have a place in my heart and thankfully most of them were not as badly behaved as the duo in my book. I wanted to write something that reflected my struggles and adventures in bonding with other people’s children. I wrote this story in my very early twenties, my teenage years full of babysitting and nannying still fresh on my mind. Where did you get your inspiration for writing The Nanny Song? Regrettably, I became unwilling to continue or let others read what I had written unless they were very close to me. Even though the positive feedback outweighed the bad, I found myself incapable of handling it at the time. Bottom line, I let the overly critical and negative remarks of kids and (even) adults get to me. It was all very exciting, but I was a sensitive kid and putting myself and my words on display filled me with anxiety. I even got to go with the company and tour schools to speak publicly to kids about literacy and writing. I was in the paper, interviewed on the news, and had two book signings-one at Barnes and Noble, the other at Borders.

I guess you could say I had my fifteen minutes of local fame. By the time I was 14 I had my first book published. My mother saw it and ended up sending them my manuscript without my knowledge. When I was in 5th grade a publishing company came to my school for an assembly presentation. I’ve written since I was a child, creating my own little stories in crayons or markers and sometimes rewriting the endings of books I’d read.

If I’m not writing, in my free time I’m hanging out with my brother watching Doctor Who, Star Trek and anything sci-fi.Ĭan you explain a little about your writing background? Most days my home life is busy and deafeningly loud. They’ve grown up like siblings more so than aunt and nephew. I’m also a caregiver to my 33-year-old sister with special needs. Hello!
